The first Shanghai Virtual Sports Open (SVS) and the Meita Sports Metaverse were launched on Aug. 5 in Shanghai to explore the potential of virtual sports events.

Juss Intellisports, the organizer and promoter, stated that the SVS event is China's first comprehensive virtual sports event. In the first year of its edition, five events will be played, including virtual rowing, racing, skiing, cycling, and golf, demonstrating the integration of technologies and sports.

The online live broadcast of the exhibition games on Friday showed contestants playing via digital technologies and simulators. Participants included professionals such as the 2008 Olympic eight-man boater Zhou Yinan and sports enthusiasts from all over the country. Juss Intellisports explained all sports players could have the chance to rival professional athletes and sports stars in the metaverse, thus having different and unique competing experiences and realizing "unbounded competition."

In addition, the virtual character Ada, the event's spokesperson, officially appeared at the launch event.

Over the coming year, the virtual sports will be expanded to AI fitness, running, football and basketball, and other popular sports. Meanwhile, the Meita Sports Metaverse platform will be themed on smart sports, combining AI, 5G, cloud broadcasting, cloud events, and other technologies.

Previously, Juss Intellisports introduced the F1 Esports Series China Championship in China. At the same time, many sports events have been postponed in China due to the COVID-19 epidemic in recent years.

From Sept. 1, registration for participating in the SVS will officially open, and the finals will be held in December.

The event is sponsored by the Science and Technology Sports Administration Center under the Shanghai Administration of Sports and state-owned Shanghai Juss Sports Group, co-organized by Juss Intellisports and Shanghai Media Tech. It has support from the Shanghai Electronic Sports Association, Shanghai Ice & Snow Sports Association, Shanghai Cycling Association, Shanghai Automobile and Motor Sports Association, Shanghai Boat Sports Association, and Shanghai Golf Association.
